Here is a live version of ‘Falling Like Thunder’ from the latest album ‘Even For A Shadow’ from York’s Fortyfive Vinyl Café. This is the acoustic version and different again from the album version and the single remixes. When I originally recorded this one I could not imagine how to do it live. As it happened, it was not so hard after all and now it is one of the songs I like best performing.

And the fruit of our dreams is falling

Falling like raindrops falling like thunder

We were taught that we finally broke free

Shook off the chains of history

We climbed out of the mess that was World War II

And made the world brave and new

Justice for all and homes for heroes

Lets start again from a new year zero

They said we learned from our mistakes

We built the UN and the welfare state

But as Castro said the revolution never ends

We never thought about it then

But democracy and the things we hold dear

Can never be won outright

You have to carry on the fight

‘Cos if the reins go slack

Things have a way of sliding back

And the fruit of our dreams is falling

Falling like raindrops falling like thunder

So yes let’s keep the taxes low

Then complain about the hospitals the police and the roads

But what you get is what you pay for

That is what taxes are made for

And every few years we a chance to chose

Another chance to make it all new

But when the smoke clears it’s the same old scene

We’ve been asleep too long to remember our dreams

What the Gods love is chaos

What the speculators love

Is a crash

One jump ahead with an eye to the main chance

A stash of bitcoins and a house in France

Never mind the pound is tumbling

Never mind the nation’s crumbling

And the fruit of our dreams is falling

Falling like raindrops falling like thunder

And the fruit of our dreams is falling

Falling like soldiers falling like snow

The jungle is never far away

It can never be defeated just held at bay

What the gods love is chaos

What the bankers love is a war

First destruction then reconstruction

Contracts loans and more production

Destroy a nation’s air defences then sell them new ones

We take oil credits

Armies and arming the cost is alarming

Arm for peace arm for a warning

But like a box of fireworks forever unlit

What is the point you might as well use it

It’s like a football team that never plays a match

Needs a game sometimes to keep it up to scratch

And the fruit of our dreams is falling

Falling like raindrops falling like thunder

And the fruit of our dreams is falling

Falling like soldiers falling like snow

What the gods love is chaos

What the gods love is chaos

And the jungle is never far away

It can never be defeated just held at bay
